The StageBug SB-5 is a compact stereo direct box designed to handle audio from laptops, tablets, and other consumer audio devices when amplifying through a PA system.

This passive unit features an integrated input cable, connecting directly from the headphone output via a flexible 1.5m (5′) cable with a standard 3.5mm (1/8″) stereo connector. The cable is securely fastened with a clamping strain relief and stored easily using the sidewinder cleat, making it quick to deploy in fast-paced environments. Inside, the unbalanced stereo signal is routed through custom-wound transformers that balance the signals for long cable runs—up to 100 meters (300′)—without introducing noise. These transformers also isolate the device from the PA system, preventing hum and buzz caused by ground loops. A ground lift switch adds an extra layer of protection against ground contamination.

The SB-5 offers a variety of output options, including a pair of 1/4″ TRS jacks for full stereo operation or an XLR output that sums the left and right channels to mono, saving valuable PA channels in setups where stereo isn’t necessary. A -15dB input pad is also available to reduce sensitivity, enabling connection of high-output sources without distortion.
